We first met Patti Macie and Jim Cawley of the Bokamosa Youth Foundation at a special “South Africa Night,” sponosored by the National Press Club. After a few weeks of arranging and planning, we got to meet the Bokamoso Youth Centre performers!
What a great opportunity to learn from each other! While our cultures can be so different, we found that we have much in common!
The young people from the Bokamoso Youth Centre are here in the Washington area for about a month of performances. Our meeting was a true cultural exchange and a sharing of song and dance! They are performing February 9 at George Washington University and we will be there supporting them!
The Bokamoso Youth Centre, in Winterveldt, South Africa, has helped hundreds of young people survive and thrive amidst the poverty, crime and despair of the AIDS epidemic. The word “Bokamoso” means “future” in the South African Tswana language, and that’s what the Bokamoso program has been all about since its start in 1999.
