Welcome to the Taratibu Youth Association

We are a young people’s performing arts company that focuses on African and African American culture. We use traditional and contemporary songs, dance and movement to teach principles of community building, self-determination, and spirituality.

Our symbol, the Wawa Aba, is the West African Adinkra symbol for perseverance, hardiness and toughness. Wawa Aba; from the "seed of the wawa tree" The seed of the wawa tree is extremely hard. In Akan culture, it is a symbol of someone who is strong and tough. It inspires the individual to persevere through hardship.

TYA seeks to develop these characteristics in our youth through hardwork, discipline, and love. Perseverance and toughness are characteristics needed by our youth to survive and succeed in a global economy and a society that doesn’t provide positive reinforcements or guidance for their development.

TYA’s objective is to become a young people’s professional touring company using Taratibu, a pan African drill, and the fusion of African and African American cultural in dance and song to educate and expose communities to the power and possibilities of young people with determination, purpose, cultural awareness and responsibility.

TYA Black History Show

Young Revolutionaries; the Black History Concert by TYA is presented in collaboration with 3D Productions of Joe's Movement Emporium. This theme was selected to address the importance of knowing your family history and how that affects who you are today. This show will examine how today's society shapes the self images for our young people and how, knowing family and cultural history can combat the negative effects of those images.
